Harischandra Ghat, Varanasi, India

An Aghori monk in Varanasi, in the northern Indian state of Uttar-Pradesh. The Aghori, a cryptic sect exiled from mainstream Hinduism, typically live by cremation sites, eat human flesh in ritualistic ceremonies, indulge in excrement and urine, which they drink from skulls, and use a potent mixture of bhang and alcohol to "elevate" their senses. As a highlight of their day they cover themselves in human dust from the burning ghats as this one, pictured here at a funeral at the Harischandra Ghat by the Ganges River.
